New space technology center will be created in one of the SPACE4Cities partner cities—Guimarães, Portugal

The city of Guimarães will implement a strategic plan to create a ‘Space Hub’, a technological hub that aims to promote the space sector, particularly technologies related to ‘New Space’.

Guimarães Space Hub

According to the municipality, the ‘Guimarães Space Hub’ will enhance “the stimulation of
cooperation in the space sector, focused on business, teaching and research, between the
North of Portugal and Galicia and the North of Portugal and Castilla-Leon, through
promoting the Guimarães-Vigo and Guimarães-Valladolid axes” in Spain.

The municipality says that Guimarães “has drawn up a central strategic focus in the area of science and knowledge, as an axis of development for its territory centered on innovation, industry and internationalization”.

Also according to the municipality, the ‘Guimarães Space Hub’ “will benefit from the active
and decisive role of the UMinho School of Engineering, namely Aerospace Engineering, and
the high scientific and technological competence of CEiiA, in the development of new
products and services in sectors of Aeronautics and Space, as well as in the establishment
of international partnerships of reference in the sector”.

Guimarães signed a collaboration protocol with CEiiA—Center for Engineering and Product Development, based in Matosinhos, district of Porto, “for the development of the Atlantic Operations Center project, which will control a set of 16 satellites for monitoring the Atlantic and forests, which will be built by the consortium led by the Portuguese company GeoSat, by the end of 2025”.

The Atlantic Operations Center project will control a set of 16 satellites for monitoring the Atlantic and forests.

Among the new projects in this field that the municipality has under development, in
partnership with UMinho, the ‘Fábrica do Futuro—Regional Smart Specialization Platform—Area of Industrialization and Advanced Manufacturing Systems’ stands out, “a
transformative project and fundamental that gives Aerospace Engineering an active and
decisive role in the strategic positioning of the city, the region and the country in the
emerging New Space sector”.
