Project description
The SPACE4Cities is a pre-commercial procurement project that creates replicable solutions, via smart use of European satellite data, for better and more dynamic management of urban space.
The duration of the project is 1 Feb 2024—31 Jul 2027.
Goals

We help cities become more agile and resilient in order to save resources and combat new challenges caused by e.g. climate change and energy crises.

We advance the public sector modernisation by improving the understanding of the benefits of digital transformation.

We stimulate the public sector in Europe to use space downstream products: data products and tools to support climate action and cities’ carbon neutrality goals.
The impacts we aim at are:
- We’ll bring to market new solutions with five solutions taken up in the Buyers group Phase 3 pilots, and at least 20 different solution ideas or prototypes originated from the call for tender.
- A dynamic market—a large number of buyers and suppliers is crucial for creating economic sustainability and scaling up opportunities, improving city economies and providing new business opportunities for innovative companies.
- Technological: Better understanding of potential and limitations of implementing space based services in urban context (dynamic use of public space).
- Economic: More efficient use of public space enables cities to utilise their budget better, while supporting companies conduct their business and create new innovation.
- Societal: Enhanced utilisation of public space provides citizens and local stakeholders new opportunities, results in better living environment, and can eg. increase safety and decrease pollution.
